Characteristics of the plant Urtica dioica

The plant Urtica dioica is from the Urticaceae family, genus Urtica and is regarded as one of the most studied. With regard to chemical composition specification of the entire plant, studies have established the presence of numerous different natural components in recent years. The Urtica dioica has been shown to have an abundance of chemical compounds, where different of them have been isolated and determined, such as organic acids (caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, citric acid, fumaric acid, glycyrrhizic acid, succinic acid, methoxycinchoninic acid, oxalic and silicic acids), coumarin derivatives – mainly hydroxycoumarins (umbelliferone and scopoletin), flavone glycosides (isorhamnetin, kaempferol and quercetin), phytosterols (beta-sitosterol and stigma-sterol), monoterpenes, triterpenes, tannins, neutral polysaccharides and minerals. A quantitative content of about 0.01% beta-sitosterol and about 0.001% scopoletin has been established in the plant (HPLC).
